Greetings
The Northeast Texas area that encompasses present Bowie County was once considered to be part of Arkansas. Bowie County was named on December 17, 1840 for James Bowie. As originally delineated, the county included all or part of the present Territories of Cass, Titus, and Morris Counties. Cass County was organized in 1846 from Bowie County and named for Lewis Cass. Cass County changed to Davis County in August 6, 1866 and back to Cass County June 12, 1873.
The 1870 Census lists my Paternal ancestors: Jane and Andrew Jackson, Morris Taylor, Delia Taylor, Matilda Furguson, Wiley Carter and Mary Carter that resided in Davis County,Texas. All of the aforementioned ancestors were born as slaves in the following states: Mississippi, Virginia, Alabama and Georgia.
The 1870 Census lists two of my maternal ancestors as: Alf and Mary Ann Blocker - Thompson and children: Charlotte, Emma and Seth that resided in Harrison County, Texas. The 1880 Census lists M. Thomas and widowed with the following children: Charlotte, Emma, Seth, Edward, Joe and Rosie. The Texas 1860 Schedule 2- Slave Inhabitants for Harrison County, Texas shows Mrs. M.D. Blocker as a slave owner with 3 fifteen year old females’ slaves with one being Mulatto. Oral history and a picture owned by my mother Mary D. Hurd-Jackson provided strong evidence that the Mulatto 15 year old female slave was Mary Ann Blocker-Thompson.
The 1880 Census lists my other Maternal ancestors: Dave Hurd and Net Hawkins, Nicie Ann McCowan, in Harrison County, Texas. Nicie Ann McCowan-Jackson is listed as household Head and widowed in 1880 with father of her six sons residing in North Carolina. There is neither 1870 nor 1880 Census recorded data that verifies Fed Jackson ever resided in Harrison County other than fathering sons between 1858 and 1870. The 1880 Census for North Carolina does list a Fed Jackson as married in 1880.

I want to thank Gretta Stewart-Griffin for her research that provided additional information on Wiley (Wily) Carter and family living in Precinct 2, Davis County, Texas in 1870 Federal Census. The Wiley Carter family consisted of: Household Head, Wiley (Wily) Carter, wife Mary, son Mat, daughter Polly, daughter Jinnie, son Aaron, and daughter Lucy. Prior to this additional information, no family member had shared any knowledge relative to our heritage that included Wiley and Mary had additional children other Aaron.
I want to thank Cynthia Wilson-Cloman for sharing family photo's and names of additional Hurd family members. The Judge P. Hurd photo album has a photo of her Aunt and my cousin Belzora Jackson-Hurd that was my first grade teacher at Hickory Grove Elementary School in Marshall, Texas.
